Dermatologist Explains: Which is the Best Retinol for You!

There are so many retinoids out there online and in your local stores, and it can get overwhelming. Many of my patients ask how I would break them down and when would I reocmmend certain retinoids (retinol vs retinaldehyde vs prescription tretinoin). Here we break it down by age and by budget and skincare goals. Do not use any retinoids if you’re pregnant. Hope this helps!

  1. i’m 36 and want the anti aging benefits but also have big pores and (very) oily skin. Alpharet Clearing burns my skin. Is the regular Alpharet ok for my concerns? I don’t get cystic acne (just whiteheads and blackheads)

  2. I am 77 and I have never had any problem with my skin, even in my teenage period. But one of my grandsons, now 14, has. He is also autistic, which was the reason I have done tons of resarche and learned a lot about metabolism, mitochondria, genes etc. This knowledge helped him a lot. Now, I wonder why you dermatologists treat the skin as it is not an integral part of the body. It seems to me that retinol might be missing in his food, or that some genetic weakness might be present. I am very gratefull for the connection I have just found between retinol and acne and I will dig deeper but in the meantime, if we introduce cod liver oil in his diet instead of other fish oils, it certainly will not hurt him, providing we take care about daily dose.

  3. Thank you to all the info on Retinol. So nice of you to help us to stay informed..so we don’t waste money on products that don’t work.
