Vitamin C test , does it work? dermatologist opines

This experiment is done to demonstrate the presence of vitamin C in the product. It is not a test of efficacy or potency of vitamin C.

▪️Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) can make Betadine (povidone-iodine) solution transparent due to a chemical reaction.
This is called redox reaction.

▪️Vitamin C is a reducing agent, while Betadine contains iodine, an oxidizing agent.

▪️Vitamin C reduces the iodine in Betadine, converting it from its oxidized form to iodide ion.

▪️The reduced iodine (I-) is colorless, whereas the oxidized form (I2) is brown. This color change makes the Betadine solution transparent.

▪️Even a tablet of vitamin C will make betadine transparent.

This experiment only shows the presence of vitamin C and is not a proof of efficacy.
